Carbon County, PA, and Natural Lands announced completion of the first conservation project to come to fruition through the county’s new Open Space Grant Program. Natural Lands purchased a once-vulnerable, 72-acre wooded property in East Penn Township using grant funds from the program and immediately transferred it to the PA Game Commission as an addition to Game Lands No. 217. The property will be open to the public for recreation and hunting and will remain preserved forever.

Preserve Manager Zane Miller has spotted quite a few box turtles as he goes about his workdays. The more he encountered, the more he began to wonder how robust their population was. So, he set about studying them.

The 308-acre Crebilly Farm is an oasis of green near the intersection of Street Road and Route 202 in a heavily developed and quickly growing portion of Chester County. Gently rolling fields, rustling leaves in a shady woodland, meandering streams, and birdsong. It’s hard to believe this property was once the subject of heated debate, many late-night township meetings, legal battles, and community petitions.

The forested tract in Lehigh County protects scenic views from the Appalachian Trail and offers essential habitat for wildlife.

One seed at a time, these volunteers are growing plants to increase the biodiversity both at Stoneleigh and yards, gardens, and patio planters across the region.
