Variegated Red Maple

Acer rubrum ‘Vanity’

This tree probably thinks this description is about it, doesn’t it? Spectacular variegated red maples don’t come around everyday, so we can hardly blame it. The new growth emerges a vibrant pink in spring, followed by a mosaic of exquisite creamy white and green speckled leaves. Further in the season the intensity fades ever so slightly, but my-oh-my what an incredible first impression. Although already a diminutive tree, we like to tip ours back in late winter to intensify the colorful display. As with all red maples, expect beautiful fall color as well as those early flowers that help sustain our native bee species.

Conditions: Full sun to part sun; wet to average soil
Size: 25′ – 35′ tall, 20′ – 30′ spread
Zone: 4 – 9
Wildlife Value: Early flowers provide nectar and pollen to bees, including mason bees; birds eat the seeds
