Eastern Wahoo

Euonymus atropurpureus

We understand if you want to plant Eastern Wahoo just to say the name. Luckily, there’s plenty else to love about it too! This unique woody plant is related to the equally delightfully-named Hearts-a-Bustin’, but their growth habits and fruits are quite different. Eastern Wahoo grows much taller, sometimes even resembling a small tree, and bears smaller bright pink fruits in the fall. But the most striking feature of Eastern Wahoo is its astonishing fall color, which can very in shade but is nearly always brilliant.

Conditions: Full sun to part shade; average to moist soil
Size: 12′ – 20′ tall, 15′ – 20′ spread
Zone: 3 – 7
Wildlife Value: Flowers attract small bees and pollinating flies; fruits serve as food for birds; larval host to several moth species
