Sunflower

Helianthus ‘Lemon Queen’

When life gives you lemons, say thank you very much and watch your garden erupt with lemony-yellow color from late summer all the way to first frost. This perennial sunflower will tower up to 9 feet tall with small but very numerous flowers that are loved by bees, butterflies, and birds alike. Don’t be intimidated by its size. It spreads slowly via rhizomes, rarely self-seeds, and is generally low maintenance – a gentle giant perfect for back-of-house support or show-stopping center stage.

Conditions: Full sun; moist, well-draining soils; tolerant of a wide range of soils
Size: 6′ – 9′ height, 3′- 4′ spread
Zone: 5 – 9
Wildlife Value: Nesting site for some small birds; flowers attract many pollinators, including many specialist native bee species (Andrena accepta, Megachile pugnata, Melissodes agilis, and more); seeds provide food for various birds
