Rose Turtlehead

Chelone obliqua ‘Alba’

The botanical name Chelone is derived from the ancient Greek word for tortoise, and from the English common name – Turtlehead – you’ll find that these white flowers resemble the upturned faces of open-mouthed baby turtles! This selection of a favorite wetland perennial wildflower boasts white blossoms amid leathery dark green leaves in late summer. The species is naturally found in moist woodlands and swampy areas, making turtlehead a great choice for shady woodlands, native plant gardens, bogs or pond edges, and children’s gardens or naturalized borders where they won’t dry out.

Conditions: Full sun to part shade; moist to wet soils
Size: 2′ – 3′ tall, 1′ – 2′ wide
Zone: 5 – 9
Wildlife Value: Larval host for several butterfly and moth species; flowers attract bees and butterflies
