Puttyroot Orchid
Aplectrum hyemale
Add some winter interest with one of our native orchids! Puttyroot orchid is an unusual plant with an interesting life cycle. In fall, it puts up a single large pinstriped leaf, which persists through winter and into early spring. As the leaf dies back, this orchid puts up a single stalk with many purple and yellow flowers that are very reminiscent of the tropical orchids we see in greenhouses and conservatories. In the right spot, puttyroot can form colonies, adding a fascinating element to the winter garden.
