Ninebark
Physocarpus opulifolius
Ninebark is a tried-and-true shrub best known for its exfoliating bark that peels off into glorious red strips. Its flowers are pretty small, usually white or pink, and give way to droopy, red, clustered fruit. A great plant for winter interest – the bark can be a real show stopper.
Conditions: Full sun to part shade; slightly acidic, well-drained soil
Size: 5′ – 8′ tall, 4′ – 6′ spread
Zone: 2 – 8
Wildlife Value: Dried seed capsules make for great bird food; native spiraea leaf beetle (a good bug!) relies on the foliage for food and usually doesn’t damage the plant too much
