Giant Solomon’s Seal
Polygonatum biflorum var. commutatum
Much as mighty King Solomon once ruled over the ancient kingdom of Israel, Giant Solomon’s Seal rules over the garden’s herbaceous perennials. This beauty can grow up to 7′ tall! This stately variety blooms in late spring and early summer with creamy white flowers hanging off of delicate green leaves. Blue or black fruits develop in the late summer or early fall for some seasonal interest. Giant Solomon’s Seal can even help stabilize wet or eroding soil.
Conditions: Part to full shade (benefits from some sun); medium to wet soil
Size: 3′ – 7′ tall, 3′ – 4′ spread
Zone: 3 – 7
Wildlife Value: Roots (rhizomes) provide food for small mammals; fruits attract small birds, including hummingbirds
