False Sunflower
Heliopsis helianthoides var. scabra ‘Burning Hearts’
This robust bloomer is an eyecatcher in the garden. From June to mid-October, masses of yellow flowers with bright red-orange centers (or hearts) dance atop dark, purple-tinged foliage. This red-stemmed cultivar does not self-sow as readily as the straight species and grows in a tidier habit – especially when ‘Chelsea chopped’ in mid to late May. This plant has high deer, rabbit, and salt tolerance, making it a great choice for even the toughest gardens.
Conditions: Full sun to part sun; tolerates a wide variety of soil types
Size: 3′ – 4′ tall, 1.5′ – 2′ spread
Zone: 3 – 9
Wildlife Value: Flowers attract butterflies and various pollinators; seeds provide food for small birds; host plant for the Rigid Sunflower Borer
