Climbing Fetterbush
Pieris phillyreifolia
Climbing Fetterbush is a fascinating plant in the wild, demonstrating two very different growth habits depending on its location. In its vine form, the rhizomes grow under the bark of trees, usually Pond Cypress or Atlantic White Cedar, climbing high into the canopy. In its shrubby form, its rhizomes spread underground, forming short, dense colonies. The more commonly grown selection is the spreading, shrubby form, perfect for adding winter interest with its lustrous, evergreen foliage. Come early spring, delicate bell-like flowers bloom, attracting small bees and bringing some of the first flowers to the native garden.
