Buttonbush

Cephalanthus occidentalis ‘SMCOSS’ Sugar Shack®

In the wild, Buttonbush is most often found near wetlands and bogs, but luckily for us, this fabulous shrub is adaptable to many soil conditions. Round, white, alien spaceship-like flower heads bloom in early summer and are highly attractive to pollinators of all sorts, especially butterflies. Later in summer, these flowers give way to large, red showy fruits, and maybe even a second flush of flowers. This compact variety allows it to sneak into almost any garden space.

Conditions: Full sun to part shade; average to wet soil
Size: 3′ – 4′ tall, 3′ – 4′ spread
Zone: 4 – 10
Wildlife Value: Flowers highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators; fruit attractive to birds; larval host for Cecropia, Hydrangea Sphinx, and Connubial Underwing moths
