American Beautyberry
Callicarpa americana
It’s pretty easy to see how American beautyberry got its common name. Spectacular, bright purple berries are the namesake of this lovely, southerly shrub, providing a berry color uncommon among our native flora. With arching stems and a loose growth habit, beautyberry is perfect for woodland edges and informal gardens or prune the stems back hard in late winter for a fuller, more compact look. Plant in a protected spot to prevent dieback during harsh winters and watch as the birds feast upon the brilliant berries through fall and into winter.
