Once part of a larger 400-acre farm, the 108 acres that make up Paunacussing Preserve have been an important thread in the agricultural fabric of the area for several hundred years. An early 1800’s bank barn and stone farmhouse serve as reminders of this pastoral history, as do the fifty acres of land that are still actively farmed. The preserve’s remaining natural areas—woodlands, meadow, and wetlands—are managed to promote native plant diversity and wildlife habitat.

History
As an old Bucks County farmstead, the property has been home to many different families through the centuries. Before European settlers farmed the land, the area was home to Native Americans. Many arrowheads and artifacts have turned up on the property through the years, most notably the “Lenape Stone,” which is now a part of the collection of the Mercer Museum in Doylestown. In 1932, Charles and Mae Coiner acquired the property. After living on the property for over 50 years, they decided to donate it to Natural Lands Trust so that it could be preserved forever in its natural state.

Highlights
The preserve is named for the Paunacussing Creek, which arises from several springs on the property. At the heart of our stewardship goals for the preserve is the protection and preservation of these natural springs and headwaters area integrity.
