Building Management

Owning nature preserves comes with an added responsibility - the many dozens of buildings and other structures on the preserves.

Caring for these buildings requires a whole different set of skills and a serious commitment to maintenance. Our building stewardship department consists of master carpenters who are dedicated to their craft, as well as conservation.

The facilities on our preserves include barns, houses, dams, wells, springhouses, and many other kinds of structures. Caring for them means everything from routine maintenance to complete renovations.

Building Management Highlights
  • The Visitors Center at Crow's Nest Preserve was the result of totally re-building the barn there. The design and construction respects the historic and rustic original barn while providing an excellent location for educational and community programs. The interior contains lumber made from fallen trees pulled from NLT preserves.
  • Our Hildacy Farm Headquarters is an award-winning "green building" featuring geothermal heating and cooling, many recycled materials and creative use of natural light.
