Bird House Cam - High Speed View

April 29, 2010 - Looks like a Chickadee has claimed the nest box. Nest construction can take up to two weeks and only the female of the breeding pair will build the nest. She starts with coarse materials like moss and bark, then lines the nest with softer materials such as animal fur, plant fibers, and grass. She'll likely begin laying eggs a couple days after the nest is complete, laying between six and eight eggs total. Stay tuned!

May 4, 2010 - Mama Chickadee has laid six eggs. She'll sit on the nest for 20-25 minutes at a time, then fly off to feed for about 7-8 minutes before returning to the nest. Only females incubate the eggs. The incubation period is about 12 days, so stay tuned to watch the eggs hatch!

May 11, 2010 - Five of the six eggs have hatched. For the first few days after the chicks hatch, the male brings almost all the food so the female can keep the hatchlings warm. They are fed several times an hour during daylight. By around day 12, both parents provide equal amounts of food.

May 19, 2010 - The five hungry hatchlings are keeping mom and dad busy. Their eyes are still closed, but their mouths are wide open!

May 25, 2010 - Two babies have fledged while three remain in the nest.
